Nightly Blaze on Valley Drive.

Scene-of-the-fire-on-Valley-Drive
It was not a Friday the 13th, nevertheless it happened on a 13th.

Today, July 13, around 3 a.m. a house on the south end of Valley Drive and north of Chandler Street caught on fire.
What-is-left-of-the-house-on-Valley-Drive

Valley Drive is the short private road to the left if you drive up Davidson Road on the north side of the parking lot to Team Hoyt’s Drive-in Restaurant. The fire rescue vehicles shown in the picture above are on Chandler Street.

The fire fighters were only able to prevent the fire from spreading, the house was a total loss.

House?
This was an abandoned house...no electrical service...by my account it was at 4AM and it was delibrate. I spent 30 minutes "watering" my house before work. CBS 3(springfield) has been kicking around as well. Reference a 06/24 article talking about possible arsons in Brimfield via MassLive.com..Nice thing to wake up to.

Good Job
I would like to tell Holland Fire Department, GOOD JOB! The fact that no other structures were damaged is a tribute to your skill and training.
I am so glad to see you had the remaining structure torn down so none of the Children in the neighborhood will be hurt.

Sorry you had to work in all that cat poop. They have at least 40 black cats in the house next door to the blaze. Our BOH should look at that.

Once again.. Thank you Deputy Chief Cozzens and your hardworking crew of Firefighters.

Burning Permit
Here is one.. To issue an agricultural burning permit the Chief only needs to give verbal permission for the burn according to Massachusetts General Law Chapter 111 Section 142L. I have pasted a copy below. Why does our fire Chief insist that one of his men turn out to issue a written copy of the permit prior to burning when verbal permission is all that the law requires. I would think that our firefighters turn out often enough for training and calls already and should not have to drive to the fire station to make copies of a permit when the law does not require it. I am sure our Deputy Fire Chief has plenty to do without being disturbed on a Sunday for unnecessary paperwork. The law is below.

PART I. ADMINISTRATION OF THE GOVERNMENT

TITLE XVI. PUBLIC HEALTH

CHAPTER 111. PUBLIC HEALTH

NUISANCES

Chapter 111: Section 142L. Agricultural burning

Section 142L. Notwithstanding the provisions of sections one hundred and forty-two A to one hundred and forty-two E, inclusive, the burning of tree prunings, diseased plant materials, and brush from land clearing operations, which are the direct result of the normal commercial pursuit of agriculture, as defined in section one A of chapter one hundred and twenty-eight, shall be allowed subject to the permission of the local fire chief which need not be in writing. Said permission shall be based solely upon whether or not appropriate meteorological conditions exist to ensure safe burning.

Chandler Road or Valley Drive?
I jst talked to an abutter of the house that fell victim to arson by the fife arrested Firefighters.
According to the abutter, the destroyed house had another fire about 10 years ago during which a separate garage burned to the ground. The property has a right of way on Valley Drive (the sign reads "Valley RD, but maps list the way as "drive" not "road.")
The address is Chandler road and the Fire Marshall refers to the address in his statements as Chandler Road.
